- "Salsa has no borders, no barriers," sings ORQUESTA DE LA
- LUZ -- and these salseros know what they're singing about. All
- of them are Japanese. The band mastered the Latin sound by
- listening to recordings and jamming with salsa musicians touring
- Japan. In the U.S., their loyal listeners include Hispanic
- salsaphiles who, as bandleader Shingo "Carlos" Kanno freely
- admits, were attracted by the group's novelty before being won
- over by its sound. Now Orquesta's albums have gone gold and
- platinum, and the combo has shared stages with Latin greats like
- Tito Puente and Celia Cruz -- the last a particular thrill for
- lead singer-lyricist Nora. "To sing salsa, it's most important
- to have feeling, and Celia has a lot of feeling," she remarks.
- "I learned feeling from her."
